The Trust Project What is this? GRAND FORKS — The Community Foundation of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks & Region has announced its name will officially change to the Northern Red River Community Foundation, effective Jan. 1. The change marks a milestone for the organization, transitioning to a title that, organization leaders say, better encapsulates its regional identity and nearly 30-year commitment to local philanthropy. ADVERTISEMENT "Our name has served us well and is an important part of our history," Becca Baumbach, president and CEO of the foundation, said in a statement sent to the media. "But as our partnerships and impact have grown, so has our understanding of what connects the communities we serve. The Northern Red River Community Foundation reflects both our shared sense of place and the relationships that make this work possible." Operationally, the transition will be seamless for current partners. The Northern Red River Community Foundation will function as a "doing business as" name, meaning the organization’s legal name, tax identification number, governing board and existing charitable fund agreements will remain unchanged. The foundation’s roots stretch back to 1998, when it was established by community leaders following the historic Flood of 1997. The organization has grown significantly over the last three decades, facilitating more than $17.1 million in grants to date to support local causes, nonprofits, and charitable initiatives throughout the northern Red River Valley. According to the media release, the decision to rebrand stems from a strategic planning process initiated by the board of directors in 2025. “This is a new name, not a new mission,” Baumbach noted. “The Red River has long been part of our shared history, connecting communities across generations. We don't experience our region as separate cities and counties. Our lives and relationships are woven throughout the area.” Comments Share Share this article News Reporting News Reporting Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
